‘HELPING your BODY HEAL ITSELF’
Sciatica - Treatment, Symptoms and Causes of Sciatica
A huge amount of people suffer from the condition known as 'sciatica' of which Bowen Therapy has been highly effective for many.
What is Sciatica?
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body and begins from nerve roots in the spinal cord in the low back through the buttocks that then combine to form the "sciatic nerve." Sciatica symptoms occur when the large sciatic nerve is irritated or compressed.
The most common causes of sciatica are a herniated (slipped) disc, spinal stenosis (narrowing of the part of your spine where nerves pass through) spondylolisthersis (when one of the bones in your spine slips out of position) and a back injury.
The term sciatica describes the symptoms of leg pain—and often tingling, numbness, or weakness that originate in the lower back and travels down the large sciatic nerve in the back of the leg.
Symptoms of Sciatica
Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent and irritating to constant and debilitating. Symptoms vary from each individual and depending on severity but often include one or more of the following;
Constant pain in only one side of the buttock or leg (rarely in both legs)
Pain that is worse when motionless
Pain that occurs sporadically
Leg pain that is often described as burning, searing or tingling (as opposed to a dull ache)
A sharp pain that may make it difficult to stand up/walk
Weakness, numbness, or difficulty moving the leg, foot, and/or toes
Sciatica in Pregnancy?
Whilst pregnancy does not 'cause' sciatica, some say it can be more common, especially in later pregnancy when the increasing size of baby puts more pressure on the sciatic nerve. Evidence towards this is inconclusive but we do know that sitting for long periods and poor posture can lead to sciatica, so that's a good reason to stay active during pregnancy. The signs and symptoms are similar to those caused by pelvic girdle pain (PGP) however, sciatica symptoms are usually more severe, and affect just one side of the body. If you do develop sciatica during pregnancy, this would probably have happened regardless, but can be another challenging aspect to your pregnancy and something you'll want support with.
Bowen Therapy and Sciatica
Many people find Bowen technique to be an effective treatment for sciatica, with often only a short course of treatments giving long lasting and effective relief. Many come across this therapy only after exhausting the more common modalities of massage, osteopathy, and chiropractic, etc. and/to find that this gentle, non-forceful technique is not only effective at addressing the symptoms of sciatica, but has a whole host of other benefits too! This is because Bowen is holistic; it addresses your entire body, not only the sciatica.
Bowen works on a deep level, gently and powerfully helping your whole body rebalance the tensional relationships of the connective tissues (fascia) which in turn can take the pressure off of the sciatic nerve and therefore relieving the symptoms. Bowen is also know to relax your central nervous system, allowing your body to be more in its ‘rest and repair’ state which is so often under active in our highly stressed modern lives.

'I was suffering with pains in my leg for some time. I visited a physiotherapist, who diagnosed me with sciatica, but was unable to bring any relief to my discomfort. The Bowen Technique on the other hand brought substantial relief to my symptoms even after just one treatment. I only needed four sessions in total to almost alleviate the problem. Now and again it creeps back, but never as bad as it was at the beginning, and nothing a couple of sessions with Seamus can't sort out! I highly recommend Bowen and Seamus if you suffer from sciatica.' M.K.
